There is Nothing Too Hard for Him

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Jeremiah 32.27

God offers these words in reply to Jeremiah’s prayer in this chapter. The prophet has complete confidence in God (note v.17 - “There is nothing too hard for You”), yet he is confused. God has told him to buy some family land in Anathoth, which he has done. Nonetheless, the Babylonians are laying siege to Jerusalem and the city is destined to fall, just as God had predicted. What then is the point of buying land and preserving deeds if Judah is certain to fall? As the chapter concludes, God reassures Jeremiah that He will bring His people back from captivity (v.36-44). For those of us who look at these events in retrospect, it’s much easier to see what God was doing than it was for Jeremiah, living in prison in a besieged city that was sure to be destroyed.

I am stirred by Jeremiah’s faith. While God was open with him about His workings, it was still difficult for Jeremiah to see. Yet, his estimation of God remained unwavering - “There is nothing too hard for You.” God’s echo of these words in v.27 is a reassurance. “You are right. There is nothing too hard for Me. What’s happening may make no sense to you. But I’ve got this.”

It is imperative that we respect the holiness of God. He is not us. We are not Him. His nature is beyond our ability to fully grasp. We know of Him only what He has revealed, and to think of Him in any terms that limit His wisdom, knowledge, or power is to terribly underestimate Him. He Who is responsible for both the complexity of one cell and the vastness of the universe must not be denigrated by our appraisals. Who are we to question His doings, His demands, His revelation? How dare we think we can change His Word or affirm what He would or would not do. He is God. We are not.
