Elder Qualifications
Shepherds are men of character
- He is above reproach (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
Some qualities would make a man unfit to shepherd God’s people:
He must not be a drunkard (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
He must not be violent (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
He must not be quarrelsome (1Tim 3)
He must not be a lover of money (1Tim 3)
He must not be arrogant (Titus 1)
He must not be quick-tempered (Titus 1)
Some qualities are essential for God’s shepherds to better know and show concern for His flock
He must be respectable (1Tim 3)
He must be hospitable (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
He must be gentle (1Tim 3)
He must be self-controlled (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
He must be a lover of good (Titus 1)
He must be upright (Titus 1)
Some qualities are essential for God’s shepherds to feed and protect His flock
He must be sober-minded (1Tim 3)
He must be able to teach (1Tim 3)
He must be holy (Titus 1)
He must be disciplined (Titus 1)
He must hold fast to the trustworthy word (Titus 1)
Some qualities emphasize the development and demonstration of character necessary to shepherd the flock.
He must not be a new convert (1Tim 3)
He must have a good reputation with those outside the church (1Tim 3)
He must be the husband of one wife (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
He must have children who believe / manage his own household well (1Timothy 3; Titus 1)
