Elder Qualifications

Shepherds are men of character

  • He is above reproach (1Tim 3; Titus 1)
     

Some qualities would make a man unfit to shepherd God’s people:

  • He must not be a drunkard (1Tim 3; Titus 1)

  • He must not be violent (1Tim 3; Titus 1)

  • He must not be quarrelsome (1Tim 3)

  • He must not be a lover of money (1Tim 3)

  • He must not be arrogant (Titus 1)

  • He must not be quick-tempered (Titus 1)
     

Some qualities are essential for God’s shepherds to better know and show concern for His flock

  • He must be respectable (1Tim 3)

  • He must be hospitable (1Tim 3; Titus 1)

  • He must be gentle (1Tim 3)

  • He must be self-controlled (1Tim 3; Titus 1)

  • He must be a lover of good (Titus 1)

  • He must be upright (Titus 1)
     

Some qualities are essential for God’s shepherds to feed and protect His flock

  • He must be sober-minded (1Tim 3)

  • He must be able to teach (1Tim 3)

  • He must be holy (Titus 1)

  • He must be disciplined (Titus 1)

  • He must hold fast to the trustworthy word (Titus 1)
     

Some qualities emphasize the development and demonstration of character necessary to shepherd the flock.

  • He must not be a new convert (1Tim 3)

  • He must have a good reputation with those outside the church (1Tim 3)

  • He must be the husband of one wife (1Tim 3; Titus 1)

  • He must have children who believe / manage his own household well (1Timothy 3; Titus 1)
